Pennsylvania Oil Tank Removal

PA gives financial assistance to help pay for tank cleanup.

Here are the requirements & details about the program.

• Tanks cannot be larger than 3,000 gallons.

• PA makes available $500,000 per year for this program.

• PA DEP has a 2 page application to get grant approval.  The application process has been streamlined and doesn’t even need to be notarized.

• If you had to clean-up a leak from an oil tank and the leak occurred after January 30, 1998, you are eligible.

• A $1,000 deductible must be paid by the owner.

• The maximum grant for reimbursement of costs is limited to the amount paid for the cleanup or $4,000.00 whichever is less.

• Home buyers: A person buying a home may want to test the soil or hire a tank testing company.   This would help determine the condition of the oil tank prior to taking possession of the property.

What costs are eligible for reimbursement?

• excavation, emptying, removing, transporting & disposing of the underground tank.
• removing contaminated soil
• soil sampling & water sampling
• restoring disturbed or contaminated areas.

Costs that are NOT covered:

• removal of underground tanks that have not leaked
• repairing above ground tanks including those located in cellars & basements.
